Davidson hoping to better Socceroo dad

Jason Davidson's dad Alan is considered a Socceroos legend, but his son is now on the brink of doing something he never did - go to a World Cup.

His dad is considered a Socceroos great, now defender Jason Davidson not only wants to follow in his footsteps, he wants to better them.

Alan Davidson has earned legendary status in the sport, making 79 Socceroos appearances during is time in the national team from 1980-1991.

He was named in the best 11 Socceroos of all time.

But while he has many accolades, he has never played at a World Cup.

Now his son Jason is on the brink of doing just that.

Coach Ange Postecoglou named Davidson in his preliminary 30-man squad on Wednesday.

The mentor's first-choice left-back, he appears a near-certainty to make the final 23, which will be named in Brazil on June 2.

The 22-year-old, who only has five caps to his name, says he couldn't resist the chance to rub it in to his dad, who is beaming with pride at the prospect.

"Inside our family, that's the joke we have at home that he hasn't played in a World Cup, hopefully that's something I can have over him," he said.

"But he's very proud and it's not a competition between us.

"He's my father first and being an ex-Socceroo he's honoured and proud of me.

"He knows how hard it's going to be and he's lived down this road.

"He wants me to work hard this camp and take nothing for granted and make sure I don't give Ange a reason to drop me."

Ever since the retirement of Scott Chipperfield in 2010, left-back has been a problem spot for the Socceroos.

In his first game at the helm against Costa Rica last November, Postecoglou started Davidson in the position.

Despite a horror showing, which included an own goal, the coach stuck with him for the next game against Ecuador in March.

Davidson, who plays in the Dutch top flight for Heracles Almelo, says he feels he's matured since making his Socceroos debut in 2012, and will only get stronger in the current Socceroos training camp.

"It wasn't ideal scoring the own goal, but you grow as a footballer and I'm still young," he said.

"You are always developing with every training camp and every time I step on the field I feel I've matured over the last 18 months since I made my debut so I'm just happy the way I'm going.

"I've been working hard all season, had good form and I'm trying to bring that confidence into the national team.

"If I do that I think Ange will stick by me and I have to repay the favour."
