WHERE THE LEADERS CAMPAIGNED

* Prime Minister Scott Morrison: launched coalition official campaign in Melbourne.

* Labor leader Bill Shorten: also in Melbourne

WHAT THE COALITION WANTED TO TALK ABOUT

* The future. Morrison used his campaign launch to announce a $4 billion promise for the controversial East-West road link in Melbourne and a new first home buyers' scheme.

WHAT LABOR WANTED TO TALK ABOUT:

* The mood for change. Shorten announced $10 billon for a suburban rail loop in Melbourne.

THE LATEST POLLS

* A YouGov/Galaxy poll in Brisbane's Sunday Mail shows Queenslanders prefer Morrison's money-in-your pocket approach to tax over Shorten's new taxes for better services.

* More than half of older Australians want greater action on climate change compared with a mere 28 per cent at the time of the 2016 election, a survey for COTA Australia showed.

WHAT MADE NEWS:

* Morrison announced a new scheme to help first home buyers into the market with a five per cent deposit rather than 20 per cent.

* Reports suggest the safe Liberal seat of Higgins could fall to Labor at the May 18 election.

THEY SAID WHAT?

* "It's only a quarter of a percentage point lower than what was in our budget. It's slightly swings and roundabouts. The differences are not major".
