Star of the day: Hurdler Omar McLeod restores Jamaican sprinting pride by winning gold in the 110m hurdles.

Only Australian performance: Lauren Wells was Australia's sole competitor on Monday and had a day to forget, finishing last in her 400m hurdles heat.

Upset of the day: Venezuelan Yulimar Rojas turned the tables on her great South American rival, Colombia's Caterine Ibarguen, to win gold in the women's triple jump.

Quote of the day: "I am not even meant to be running, so I'm more happy to be here than not be here," said US world record holder Aries Merritt after finishing fifth in the 110m hurdles final, two years after receiving a kidney transplant from his sister.

Stat of the day: Five world and Olympic women's hammer throw titles and counting is the formidable record of powerhouse Pole Anita Wlodarczyk.
