SNAPSHOT FROM DAY FIVE AT THE AUSTRALIAN OPEN:

PLAYER OF THE DAY: Elina Svitolina - The Ukrainian world No.4 is through to the last 16 for the loss of just two sets in eight matches in 2018 after capturing a tour-best five titles last year.

STAT OF THE DAY: Big-serving Croat Ivo Karlovic thundered down 52 aces but still couldn't overcome Italian Andreas Seppi, whose 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 6-7 (3-7) 6-7 (5-7) 9-7 victory came in three hours and 51 minutes.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: "How much do you have to pay Elina Svitolina to have a one-hour lesson? I got it for free." - Fifteen-year-old qualifier Marta Kostyuk after being outclassed by her fourth-seeded compatriot.

TURNING POINT: Brave Brit Kyle Edmund survived an extraordinary 20-minute, 35-point game to break Nikoloz Basilashvili early in the fourth set of his 7-6 (7-0) 3-6 4-6 6-0 7-5 third-round comeback win in near-40-degree heat on shadeless show court 2.

TOURNAMENT SUMMARY: Svitolina is the only remaining seed in her quarter of the draw, presenting the 23-year-old and any of her challengers Petra Martic, Elise Mertens and qualifier Denisa Allertova with a huge opportunity to make their first grand slam final. Third seed Grigor Dimitrov is the first big name through to the last 16 of the men's event.
