Day four snapshot from the British Open

All you need to know after an enthralling final round of the British Open at Scotland's Carnoustie Golf Links, where Francesco Molinari has won the Claret Jug.

SNAPSHOT OF THE BRITISH OPEN FINAL ROUND:

PLAYER OF THE ROUND: Francesco Molinari - the underdog tore up the script to stare down playing partner Tiger Woods and also deny superstars Rory McIlroy and defending champion Jordan Spieth to become the first Italian winner of the British Open in 158 years.

SHOT OF THE ROUND: Molinari's steel-eyed approach into the 18th to little more than a metre at the last under immense pressure sealed victory with a birdie.

QUOTE OF THE ROUND: "It's just disbelief. To look at the names on that Claret Jug, obviously, what can you say? It's the best golfers in history, and to be on there, it's incredible. From someone like me coming from Italy, not really a major golfing country, it's been an incredible journey." - Molinari.

STAT OF THE ROUND: The resurgent Woods hit the lead in the final round of a major for the first time since the 2011 Masters at Augusta National.

TOURNAMENT SUMMARY: Molinari won by two strokes with a Carnoustie 72-hole record of eight-under 276. English hope Justin Rose shared second with McIlroy and American joint third-round leaders Kevin Kisner and Xander Schauffele, with Woods a shot further back and one ahead of Spieth.

AUSSIE WATCH: Major winners Adam Scott and Jason Day finished as the leading Australians at two under, six behind the champion, with young guns Cameron Davis, at two over, and Lucas Herbert, at plus four, both enjoying fine debuts to place equal 39th and tied 51st respectively.
