A snapshot of the action from the fourth round of the US PGA Championship at Quail Hollow in North Carolina.

PGA CHAMPIONSHIP FOURTH ROUND SNAPSHOT

PLAYER OF THE DAY: Justin Thomas. He started the final round at Quail Hollow two shots off the pace but stormed home with a three-under par 68 and an eight-under total of 276 to win his first major.

ROUND OF THE DAY: Francesco Molinari, Patrick Reed, world No.1 Dustin Johnson, Rickie Fowler and Australia's Marc Leishman all fired four-under 67s at the brutally tough Quail Hollow.

STAT OF THE DAY: 19 of the past 21 major champions have been inside the top-25 in the world at the time of their victory.

SHOT OF THE DAY: Justin Thomas's birdie putt at the par-5 10th sat on the edge of the hole for 12 seconds before dropping in.

FLOP OF THE DAY: Hideki Matsuyama. With the chance to become Japan's first major winner, the world No.3 and winner of last week's WGC-Bridgestone slumped to a Sunday 72.

HOW THE AUSSIES FARED: Jason Day clawed back with a 70 on Sunday to finish one-under the card and tie for ninth; Marc Leishman (67) shared 13th at even-par; Adam Scott ( 71) finished eight-over and tied for 61st.

TOURNAMENT SUMMARY: With many of the big names including the world's top-four players fizzing out of the tournament, American young gun Thomas put his hand up to claim a maiden major victory.
