Day one snapshot from the British Open

Everything you need to know after an eventful first round of the 147th British Open at Scotland's Carnoustie Golf Links.

SNAPSHOT OF THE BRITISH OPEN FIRST ROUND

* PLAYER OF THE ROUND: KEVIN KISNER - the American took advantage of the easier morning conditions to claim the outright lead with a five-under-par 66.

* SHOT OF THE ROUND: A dead heat between Spanish star JON RAHM and dual US Open champion BROOKS KOEPKA, who both wowed the galleries by driving the par-4 third green.

STAT OF THE ROUND: Four of the past seven champions have been over 40 and 42-year-old Tiger Woods hopes to be the fifth after opening with a promising 71 in his first Open round since 2015.

QUOTE OF THE ROUND: "I just had a brain fart and I missed it into the only pot bunker where I could actually get in trouble, and it plugged deep into it." - defending champion JORDAN SPIETH ruing running up a double-bogey in a one-over 72 that left him six behind his Open housemate Kisner.

TOURNAMENT SUMMARY: Kisner leads the way, one in front of countryman Tony Finau and South Africans Zander Lombard and Erik van Rooyen, but big dogs Rory McIlroy (69), Rahm (69), Rickie Fowler (70) and Woods are all lurking. Spieth, Masters champion Patrick Reed (75) and world No.1 Dustin Johnson (76) all have ground to make up.

AUSSIE WATCH: Top hopes Jason Day and Adam Scott and debutant Cameron Smith lead the way after carding even-par 71s, with Marc Leishman (72), Cameron Smith (73), Lucas Herbert (73), Brett Rumford (74) and Matt Jones (75) not out of it but with work to do to make the cut.
