SBS World News presenter Anton Enus has been invited into the homes of some well-known Aussies to hear their stories about their first day, or early impressions of Australia.

Tonight hear from much loved Aussie chef Adam Liaw.

Liaw came to Australia from Malaysia when he was just three years old. Seeking better opportunities for their children, his parents picked Adelaide because it was the sister city of Georgetown in Penang, where Adam was born.

Liaw tells Anton Enus that as young boy he was immediately taken with the differences in Australian and Malaysian food presentation, influencing his future career.

On Wednesday night host of SBS’s Made in Italy Silvia Colloca describes how an invitation to spend Christmas in Australia with her then boyfriend (and now husband) Richard Roxburgh led to a permanent move.

On Thursday ‘Mr Football’ Les Murray, describes his family’s acceptance in Australia after fleeing Communist Hungary in the 1950s.

“My father leaned across to me in the bus and says, 'Aren't these Australians wonderful, the way they're welcoming us.'"

Chef Poh Ling Yeow finishes the week sharing images of her earliest days in Australia.

‘Day One’ stories begin tonight, Tuesday 6 January, on SBS World News at 6.30pm on SBS ONE.

Were you born overseas? We’d like to hear about your first impression of Australia as a new migrant.
