Day ready to make amends in Presidents Cup

Jason Day has said the regret of "playing poorly" at the 2015 Presidents Cup is driving him at Liberty National this week.

A humble Jason Day has shouldered the blame for the Internationals' narrow defeat at the 2015 Presidents Cup but he's determined to atone this time round.

Two years ago in Korea, Day carried huge expectations to lift the Internationals to victory after his five-win season on the US PGA Tour.

Day arrived at the teams event as the hottest player in the world courtesy of four wins in seven starts, including the US PGA Championship, as well as a brief first stint as world No.1.

But the Ohio-based Queenslander contributed a disappointing half point and a 0-4-1 record as the US team won by one point.

Day's only offering came from a halved four-ball match with countryman Adam Scott against Zach Johnson and Phil Mickelson.

He said the regret is driving him as he tees up at Liberty National in New Jersey this week in his fourth Presidents Cup.

"I definitely wish I'd stepped up more. I was frustrated with myself with how poorly I played," Day told AAP.

The Internationals have won just once (1998) since the inaugural Cup in 1994, and lost the five editions leading into 2015 by three or more points.

But the Korean event came down to several decisive singles matches on the final day.

"I take the blame for that. I didn't play good. I was No.1 on the team (ranking) for a reason, and I didn't show up," Day said.

"I let the team down two years ago in Korea.

"I didn't have a good Presidents Cup, and it was close.

"If I actually played well, we probably would have had a good shot at winning."

Internationals captain Nick Price went into bat for 29-year-old Day, saying he was "gassed after such a big (US) summer".

"I was, but that's no excuse," Day said.

"But if we can come together we have a good shot at winning this time.

"I'm hoping I can redeem myself this week."
