World No.1 Jason Day is on track for the 36-hole scoring record at the Players Championship as he leads by three in a weather-delayed second round at TPC Sawgrass.

Following up from his course record-equalling nine-under 63 on Thursday, Day was five-under through 14 holes in round two be 14-under for the tournament when bad light stopped play.

Ireland's Shane Lowry has moved to second place at 11-under after a round of 68.

Locally based Swede Jonas Blixt and German Alex Cejka chalked up second round 67s to move to 10-under-134 while Cameron Tringale joined them after a 69.

Americans Colt Knost (63), Boo Weekley (69), Gary Woodland (68) and Jerry Kelly (68), Italian Francesco Molinari and Scot Russell Knox (15 holes) share fifth at nine-under.

Knost looked set to break the course record but he three-putted the 18th green from 43 feet for his lone bogey of the day, settling to become the sixth man to shoot a record 63 at TPC Sawgrass.

Rory McIlroy also appeared ready to set a new mark when he was sitting nine under on his round through 16 holes but he bogeyed the gettable par five ninth, his last to settle for a 64 and eight under total.

Adam Scott rebounded from his shock finish in round one, where a quadruple bogey on the last hole left him with a 73.

The Australian posted a bogey-free 65 to jump back to six under par for the tournament, currently just six off the pace.

"Conditions this morning were ideal and I needed to take advantage because the 18th was obviously extremely costly yesterday," Scott said.

"I played well and now with two good rounds on the weekend we can see where it leaves me."

Aaron Baddeley (75) and John Senden (69) finished at even par, two shots back of the projected cut line.

Marc Leishman is one over through 12 holes while Matt Jones (+8) and Steven Bowditch (+7) are well back.
