Day set for final British Open tune-up

In his last event before the British Open, Jason Day will take on a field featuring Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth at the US PGA Tour's Travelers Championship.

Jason Day has vowed not to dwell on a disappointing US Open campaign, with this week's Travelers Championship his final hit-out before the British Open.

World No.4 Day will peg it up at TPC River Highlands in Connecticut on Thursday, looking to bounce back from his first missed cut in seven starts at the year's second major.

The 29-year-old Australian, whose previous US Open results included two runner-ups among five top-10s, finished nine shots outside the cut-line at debut host Erin Hills.

He was joined by world No.1 Dustin Johnson and No.2 Rory McIlroy in taking the weekend off - the first time the top three had missed the cut at a major since the rankings began in 1986.

Day's focus now turns to his first Travelers appearance since 2014, where he'll face a field featuring McIlroy, world No.6 Jordan Spieth and US Open runner-up Brian Harman.

The 10-time PGA Tour winner says he'll draw inspiration from a tie for 18th and 27th in two previous visits.

"I felt like (the US Open) was my best preparation going into a major. So to not be there on the weekend was a disappointment, but the Travelers is an event I've enjoyed playing and I have some good results at TPC River Highlands," Day told AAP.

"There's a high-quality PGA Tour field this week and it will be a great test of where my game's at."

Ohio-based Day will then spend three weeks preparing for his assault on Royal Birkdale for the 146th British Open, fuelled by coming up one shot short of a playoff for the 2015 event at St Andrews.

Day will be joined in Connecticut by countryman Marc Leishman - the only Australian to make the cut at the US Open.

Leishman is confident of continuing his superb record at TPC River Highlands, the site of his breakthrough PGA Tour win in 2012.

"It was pleasing to get a bit of momentum from the US Open coming into one of my favourite events," said Leishman.

"The Travelers was my first win on Tour, which was pretty special. It's exciting to be back at a course where I've also had two top-15 results."

A large Australian contingent also includes veterans Stuart Appleby, Greg Chalmers, Rod Pampling, Geoff Ogilvy and Cameron Percy, as well as youngsters Ryan Ruffels, Brett Coletta and Brett Drewitt.
