Day to face world No.60 in WGC match Play

Jason Day will face world No.60 Thorbjorn Olesen in the first round of the WGC-Match Play Championship missing the world's top two players.

Jason Day has been drawn to face world No.60 Thorbjorn Olesen of Denmark in the first round of a WGC-Match Play Championship notable for three big name absentees.

World No.11 Day is seeded second in his 16-player bracket that includes world No.3 Henrik Stenson for the $US9 million, 64-man tournament starting on Wednesday.

Marc Leishman, the only other Australian in the field, faces a first round clash with Sergio Garcia.

World No.1 Tiger Woods, Australia's world No.2 Adam Scott and world No.4 Phil Mickelson are all missing the tournament, opening the door for three players outside the top 64 in the world rankings to move into the lineup.

Stenson will open against Thailand's Kiradech Aphibarnrat, the lowest-ranked player in the field at No.67.

Stenson, Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, and Zach Johnson were confirmed as top seeds in the four brackets.

World No.5 Rose, the reigning US Open champion, will start against 66th-ranked American Scott Piercy.
