Jason Day appears set to follow Tiger Woods' path as one of the world's most marketable golf stars, closing in on signing a lucrative apparel deal with Nike.

While the big-name sports brand recently called time on their golf equipment range, Day will take up a deal worth more than $US10 million ($AU 13.4 million) annually to wear their gear, according to ESPN.

The deal will make him one of Nike's biggest golfing names, alongside Woods and Rory McIlroy wearing the companies shoes, apparel and hats.

The Australian world No.1 will continue to use TaylorMade clubs, but will switch from Adidas clothing - with the latter also looking to close up its golf business.

Day has now spent 25 consecutive weeks at the top spot in the rankings, the most since Rory McIlroy occupied the spot between August 2014 and August 2015.

Woods first signed with Nike in 1996, but his recent decline and absence has contributed to the fact a Nike-backed player has not won any of the past eight majors.

In contrast, Day has appeared in the top 10 in six of the past eight majors.
