Day two off the pace at PGA playoffs

Australian golfer Jason Day has notched six birdies and an eagle in an impressive start to the US PGA's playoff series in New Jersey.

FP - Australian golfer Jason Day is two shots off the lead after his first round of the US PGA Tour's playoffs series in New Jersey.

Day carded a five-under-par 66 at The Barclays on Thursday to trail American leader Kevin Stadler.

Ryan Palmer, in-form Swede Henrik Stenson and Colombian Camilo Villegas all share second at six-under, with Day equal fifth with Matt Kuchar after the weather-disrupted opening day.

World No.1 Tiger Woods, whose five victories this season sent him into the playoffs atop the points standings, played without a bogey, posting a four-under 67 at Liberty National Golf Club.

He was tied in the clubhouse with Zimbabwe's Brendon de Jonge, Canadian Graham DeLaet and fellow Americans Nicholas Thompson, Matt Every and Morgan Hoffman, while Harris English was also at four-under having played just six holes.

Two weather delays lasted a total of five hours and 51 minutes. No one who teed off in the afternoon played more than nine holes and some completed only two.

Masters champion Adam Scott was even par through six holes when play was suspended, with several other Australians also set to resume their first rounds early on Thursday in Jersey City.

Day mixed six birdies and an eagle on the par-5 13th hole with three bogeys to be well-placed to make a big move in the FedEx Cup standings.

With six top-10 finishes this season, including a runner-up at the US Open and third at The Masters, Day began the four-event series in 14th spot on the points list.

The 25-year-old will need to push into the top seven over the first three events if he is to have destiny in his own hands as those players are guaranteed the $US10 million ($A11.16 million) bonus should they win the Tour Championship.

Scott, who tied with Day as the aggregate low scorer at the four majors in 2013, opened with a bogey but retrieved the lost shot with a birdie on three.

Former US Open champion Geoff Ogilvy had a run of four straight birdies on the back nine to shoot a first-round 68 to be four shots off the lead in equal 14th position.

Marc Leishman was three under through eight holes, Aaron Baddeley two under through three holes and Matt Jones and Stuart Appleby both one under very early in their opening rounds when play was suspended.
