De la Renta gave first ladies fashion

Michelle Obama says fashion designer Oscar de la Renta was a pioneer and a visionary.

To America's first ladies, fashion designer Oscar de la Renta was more than a skilled artist whose dresses, beaded gowns and pantsuits gave them added confidence whenever they slipped into them.

He was also a friend.

Michelle Obama calls him a pioneer and a visionary who helped generations of women embrace their most beautiful, confident selves.

Laura Bush and former President George W Bush say they are mourning the loss of "our dear friend".

Hillary Rodham Clinton says her whole family will miss de la Renta's warmth and friendship.

Nancy Reagan says he was both a fashion legend and her friend of nearly 50 years.

De la Renta died Monday at his home. He was 82.
