He may have fallen just shy of direct entry but rapidly improving Australian Alex de Minaur has still made the Wimbledon main draw courtesy of a wildcard.

The All England Club confirmed de Minaur would be one of eight men's singles wildcards for the July 2-15 grand slam.

De Minaur is currently well inside the grand slam cut-off for entry at No.78 but was outside the top 100 when the rankings were taken into consideration last month.

The 19-year-old's rapid rise in recent times was helped by winning the grass-court challenger event in Nottingham last Sunday.

De Minaur's cause was also helped by his run to the final of the Surbiton Trophy Challenger Tour event.

The All England Club looked favourably on his decision to compete in two of the Lawn Tennis Association's (LTA) events in the UK instead of heading to Europe.

Bernard Tomic and Thanasi Kokkinakis will play in qualifying matches for Wimbledon next week.

Meanwhile, Australia's retired former world No.1 Lleyton Hewitt has received a wildcard into the doubles.

The 2002 singles champion will team with 25-year-old fellow South Australian Alex Bolt.
