De Souza, Moore win Aust Surfing Open

Brazilian Adriano de Souza and world champion Carissa Moore have won the Australian Open of Surfing titles at Manly Beach.

Brazilian Adrian de Souza shattered home fans' hopes as he upset top seed Julian Wilson to walk away with the Australian Open of Surfing men's title.

And world champion Carissa Moore made it a double for the international contingent in the world tour second-tier event as she downed fellow Hawaiian Alessa Quizon in the women's final on a rainy, windswept Manly Beach on Sunday.

Australia's world No.6 Wilson looked the goods as he swept through the decider but it all went wrong after world No.14 de Souza nailed a pair of eight point rides in the 1.5m waves in the first few minutes.

A southerly wind squall came through, bringing heavy rain as Wilson tried valiantly to play catch up, attempting some big aerials, but fell several times and was unable to pull them off.

"It feels amazing to be the first Brazilian to win the Australian Open of Surfing," De Souza said.

"I've got so much respect for Julian Wilson, he's number six in the world and the best guy in the event. I was lucky that he fell off a few times in the final."

Moore was behind midway through her final against Quizon but showed her class to pull off a 9.43 scoring ride at won 17.10 to 15.80.

"I didn't come here expecting to win," Moore admitted.

"It's been a while since I had a jersey on and it was good to get back into it, then this morning I started getting nervous and I just had to tell myself to relax and have fun."
