Death toll 14 after Indonesian boat sinks

More bodies have been pulled from the water after an overloaded boat sank off Java, raising the death toll to 14.

The death toll from the sinking of an overloaded boat on which people were performing a traditional ceremony to mark the end of Ramadan in Indonesia has risen to 14 after rescuers recovered six more bodies.

Local disaster mitigation agency head Lulus Suprayitno said on Friday that at least two other people were still missing after Thursday's accident off the Central Javan town of Jepara.

Suprayitno said the wooden fishing boat with a capacity of 25 was carrying more than 60 people.

He said 25 of the 47 survivors were still in hospital, while three crew members were being questioned by the police.

Sea accidents are common in Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago nation with more than 17,000 islands, in part because of overcrowding and poor safety standards.
