At least 19 people have died and thousands have been displaced after floodwaters and landslides inundated homes in West Java overnight.
Mud has choked homes and cars have been left on top of each other as the death toll rose on Wednesday.
Authorities said 16 people have died in Garut while three were killed in a landslide in Sumedang further south.
Nine people are missing with searches continuing.
Rains overwhelmed the Cimanuk and Cikamuri rivers in the early hours of Wednesday, causing floodwaters to reach up to two metres, National Disaster Management Board Spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said.
In Garut, floodwaters were only knee high at 8pm on Tuesday but by 11pm they were between 1.5 to two metres.
The first floor of Garut General Hospital was reportedly evacuated with all patients moving upstairs.
"There are 252 patients evacuated to the second floor," hospital spokesman Lingga Saputra told West Java newspaper, Pikiran Rakyat.
While this time of year is usually drier in Indonesia, a combination of La Nina and warm sea waters has caused abundant rain.
