Defence launches IT upgrade project

A new project to upgrade defence's complex and clunky information technology into a centralised systems could save almost $2 billion over 10 years.

Defence has launched a project to streamline its vast, cumbersome and expensive computer system.

The project has the potential to save Defence almost $2 billion over 10 years, by consolidating 280 data centres to 11 domestic and three international centres.

Defence has one of the largest information and communications technology systems in Australia, with some 100,000 users.

The centralised processing project will consolidate infrastructure and applications, ensuring more efficient and modern systems.

An effective system was essential to Defence's readiness to conduct all its operations, including responses to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief both at home and abroad, Defence Minister David Johnston said.

The $800 million project will be managed by Lockheed Martin.
