Defence may hike base security after raids

Defence will continue to review the security level at its Australian bases after the terror raids, ADF chief Mark Binskin says.

The Australian Defence Force may boost security at bases around the country after anti-terror raids across Sydney and Brisbane.

Fifteen people have been detained and one person charged with terrorism offences after the largest counter-terrorism operation in the nation's history.

Police believe the Sydney-based group, linked to Islamic State, was planning random acts of violence against members of the public.

The plot has raised comparisons with the attack on British soldier Lee Rigby, who was hacked to death on a London street by Muslim extremists last year.

Chief of Defence Mark Binskin said the force had last week told personnel and their families to be vigilant about their own safety.

Defence constantly reviewed the level of security at its bases, he said, when asked if it would be lifted after the police raids.

"We are continuing to look at, and we may well adjust that over the coming days," Air Chief Marshal Binskin told reporters in Canberra.

"There is no doubt that this terrorist organisation does have global tentacles, and we saw that with the strikes around Sydney today."
