It's a garage sale with a difference.
The Defence Department is offloading millions of dollars in assets from bases around the country under an Austender contract.
The department's disposal and sales branch does not list Super Hornets and Land Rovers to be flogged off by the contractor.
Rather, the inventory is more like a cross between Bunnings and BCF: ship and marine equipment, aircraft components and accessories, tyres, engines, fire fighting equipment, hand tools, building materials, medical, dental and veterinary equipment and athletic gear
Most of the assets are to be removed from Moorebank, RAAF Base Amberley, Lavarack Barracks, Robertson Barracks, Palmer Barracks, RAAF Base Edinburgh, Puckapunyal Military Area and Bandiana.
The contract asks the buyer to provide a five-year business plan and ensure the "demilitarisation, sanitisation, and refurbishment" of the goods, which would be put up for online sale or auction.
Defence says the aim is to sell the items in a way that "provides value for money for the commonwealth".
