The federal government is offering school leavers short-term military service as an alternative to traditional gap year programs.

The Australian Defence Force scheme will encourage Year 12 graduates to enrol in the military for a year, without an obligation for a longer commitment.

They will be paid $45,000 a year to undertake basic military and weapons combat training, and learn navigation and other skills.

Assistant Defence Minister Stuart Robert outlined the program to Zara Zaher.
