DeGeneres: I want to make people happy

Host Ellen DeGeneres says she doesn't want to "hurt anybody" at the Oscars on Sunday night.

Ellen DeGeneres wants to make people happy as the Oscars host on Sunday night.

The comedienne and talk show host is returning for her second stint as MC of the Academy Awards after first appearing in 2007.

But despite all the hype that comes with being part of the Oscars, DeGeneres has one goal in mind for the evening.

"My intentions are to make people happy," the 56-year-old told Good Morning America.

"My intentions are to never hurt anybody, and my intentions are to have compassion and to hope I can spread that a little bit every single day."

To make sure she achieves her aim, DeGeneres has been putting the hours in preparing her words.

But spending so much time on what she wants to say has meant she's changed her mind on a number of occasions.

"I had things written months ago that I thought for sure I liked and was going to keep. And I've gotten rid of them," she said. "And I have new things, and then I'm sure I'll get rid of those. And I'm sure I'll be writing up until that morning.

"I can't expect everybody to, you know, love me and like everything I do," she added.

"I just want people to understand me and to get me and know what my intentions are."

* The 86th Academy Awards ceremony will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday March 2. The event will be broadcast live in Australia on the Nine Network from 12.30pm (AEDT) on Monday.
