Del Potro eyeing comeback in Sydney

Former US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro is set to make his comeback from 11 months out with a wrist injury at next week's Sydney International.

Former US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro will make his long-awaited return to tennis to try to defend his title at next week's Sydney International.

Del Potro last year scuppered Bernard Tomic's hopes of back-to-back titles in Sydney with a crushing victory in the final, but has been sidelined since February with a chronic wrist injury.

But the popular Argentine opted for another comeback after practice in Buenos Aires on Tuesday and said he also hoped to be fit for the Australian Open starting on January 19.

"I missed the tour. I missed to compete," he wrote on his Facebook page.

"Those feelings outweigh the pain in the wrist, which comes and goes and prevented me from having the ideal pre-season training.

"I don't expect great results. At this point, I don't care about the rankings. I take it as a reward for the effort that I put to return."

Del Potro was the world No.5 last time he played but has since slumped to 135th in the rankings.
