Del Potro triumphs in Stockholm final

Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro has defeated Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov 6-4 6-2 to successfully defend his Stockholm Open title.

Juan Martin del Potro has defeated Grigor Dimitrov 6-4 6-2 to successfully defend his Stockholm Open title.

Del Potro saved all four break points he faced against Dimitrov, the top seed, while capitalising on three out of five break opportunities in the 83-minute contest.

This is the first title that the 29-year-old Del Potro has won since getting his maiden Stockholm Open crown in 2016 and the 20th of his career.

With the win, Del Potro, the world No.19, improves his chances of competing in the ATP Finals since he is now 480 points behind Spaniard Pablo Carreno.

Despite being 9th in the ATP Race to London, venue of the season-ending tournament, Carreno is close to securing the 8th and final place in the event since Switzerland's Stan Wawrinka had to end his season due to injury.

Four players have secured spots in the tournament - Spain's Rafael Nadal, Switzerland's Roger Federer, Germany's Alexander Zverev and Austria's Dominic Thiem, while the other four spots are up for grabs.

Dimitrov, Croatia's Marin Cilic, Belgian David Goffin and Carreno are in the best position to grab the other four spots, respectively.
