Delay in asylum claim processing on Manus

Manus Island MP Ron Knight says it could be several more months before Papua New Guinea begins processing asylum seeker claims.

Manus Island MP Ron Knight says it could be several more months before Papua New Guinea begins processing asylum seeker claims.

That would make it a year since the Regional Settlement Arrangement with Australia.

Under the deal, PNG is responsible for assessing boat arrivals' claims, but first the country needs to pass legislation for processing to begin.

Thea Cowie spoke to Manus Island MP Ron Knight ahead of PNG's parliament sitting next week.
