Delay in Iraq troop announcements

Prime Minister Tony Abbott says cabinet needs to discuss the additional deployment of troops to Iraq.

A decision to send more Australian troops to Iraq may still be days away.

The New Zealand government has announced it will send 143 soldiers as part of a 400-strong joint Australia-NZ training team, subject to agreement from Canberra.

But Prime Minister Tony Abbott says cabinet has yet to discuss the increased deployment.

He also wants to have consultations with the opposition and his party room, which is not scheduled to meet before next Tuesday.

Mr Abbott heads to NZ on Friday for talks with Prime Minister John Key.
