Delhi pull off huge chase in IPL win

A swashbuckling Rishabh Pant innings has helped Delhi Daredevils to the second-biggest run chase in Indian Premier League history and into finals contention.

Delhi Daredevils pulled off the second highest successful run chase in Indian Premier League history when they overhauled Gujarat Lions' 208 with 15 balls to spare.

Rishabh Pant, with 97 off 43 balls, and opener Sanju Samson, with 61 off 31, combined for a staggering 143 runs in less than 11 overs for the second wicket.

Pant was particularly destructive, hitting nine sixes, starting with the second ball he faced and hit James Faulkner for three sixes in one over.

Eventually Pant was out, with victory well in sight, when he edged Basil Thampi behind in the 15th over, to a collective groan from the home crowd.

Earlier Gujarat, who needed to win to keep their fading finals hopes alive lit up the grund in their own right with the bat.

Despite openers Dwayne Smith and Brendon McCullum falling cheaply the third-wicket partnership of 133 between Suresh Raina (77) and Dinesh Karthik (65) had them in a prime position for a win.

That was followed by a quick-fire 27 by Aaron Finch before he was caught behind off the bowling of Kagiso Rabada.

Yet despite the big total of 7-208, Delhi chased it down with ease to keep their own finals hopes alive.
