Dellavedova helps Cavs claim NBA thriller

Australian guard Matthew Dellavedova has bagged an NBA career-high 21 points in Cleveland's nail-biting 97-96 comeback win over Detroit on Wednesday.

The Cavaliers overcame a 16-point final-quarter deficit to knock off the Pistons in the dying seconds in Michigan and keep their playoff hopes alive.

Dion Waiters clinched the win on the buzzer with a baseline jumper to give the starting guard 18 points.

But in his first season in the big time, Boomers playmaker Dellavedova topped the scoresheet for the Cavaliers, getting 36 minutes of court-time as the franchise struggles with injuries.

Dellavedova made five of his team's nine three-pointers and contributed six assists.

Forward Josh Smith led the Pistons with 24 points, eight rebounds and six assists. as Detroit lost for the sixth time in seven games.

With nine regular-season games left, Cleveland remain in 10th place in the Eastern Conference, three games behind No.8 Atlanta and half a game behind the New York Knicks.

Meanwhile, the Indiana Pacers stormed home for a 84-83 victory over the Miami Heat.

Paul George scored 23 points and Roy Hibbert had 21 for the Pacers, while for the Heat, LeBron James scored 38 points but missed a potential go-ahead late three-pointer.

San Antonio's Tim Duncan had 29 points, 13 rebounds and five assists as the Spurs overcame a fourth-quarter collapse to beat the Denver Nuggets 108-103 for their 15th straight victory.

In Sacramento, California, Carmelo Anthony scored 36 points as the Knicks held off a furious rally to beat the Kings 107-99 and move a game closer to a playoff berth.

The Toronto Raptors edged closer to their first playoff berth since 2008 after Terrence Ross scored 24 points and Kyle Lowry had 23 in a 99-90 win over the Boston Celtics.

Zach Randolph had 22 points and 13 rebounds, along with two game clinching free throws as the Memphis Grizzlies beat the Utah Jazz 91-87, while the under-manned New Orleans Pelicans beat the Los Angeles Clippers 98-96 for their fourth straight win.

In other games, the Phoenix Suns beat the Washington Wizards 99-93 and the Charlotte Bobcats were 116-111 overtime winners over the Brooklyn Nets.
