Demand for SA workers perks up

Job advertising in South Australia continues to recover but has yet to be reflected in the state's jobless rate, which remains the worst in the country.

New figures show job advertising in South Australia is the strongest in the country, in sharp contrast to having the worst jobless rate.

Department of Employment data shows job ads posted on the internet for SA rose 1.1 per cent in April to be 14.9 per cent higher than a year ago.

However, the department points out that ads in the state remain 18.6 per cent lower than recorded five years ago.

Official figures last week showed the state's unemployment rate rose to its highest level in over a year at 7.3 per cent, compared to a nationwide rate of 5.7 per cent.

Overall, the department's figures show national job ads on the internet rose by a tiny 0.1 per cent in April to be up 1.1 per cent on the year.

Among the eight occupational groups monitored by the department, four rose while one was unchanged.

The strongest group in demand by far remains "machinery operations and drivers", rising 1.6 per cent in April and 14.4 per cent compared to a year ago.
