Democrats say FBI chief may have broken the law

A leading member of the Democrats says the FBI head may have broken the law by revealing the bureau was investigating emails that could be linked to Hillary Clinton.

Democratic leader in the US Senate, Harry Reid has accused FBI head James Comey of violating an act which prevents officials from influencing an election.

The FBI has obtained a warrant to search through emails belonging to Huma Abedin who is one of Hillary Clinton's top advisors.

Emails from Huma Abedin are believed to have been found on the laptop of her estranged husband, former congressman Anthony Weiner.

He's under investigation for allegedly sending sexually explicit messages to an underage girl.

The FBI believes the emails could be pertinent to its previous investigation into Mrs Clinton's use of a private email server when she was secretary of state.

That case was closed in July without any charges being brought against Mrs Clinton.

Doctor Gorana Grgic is a lecturer in US Politics.

She told Kerrie Armstrong some observers believe James Comey has acted in a partisan way.
