Melbourne's Jack Viney will miss at least four AFL matches due to a fracture of his right fibula.

Viney knocked his leg in last Saturday's game against Greater Western Sydney and an MRI scan has confirmed a small fracture.

The break does not require surgery.

"It will be treated symptomatically and once the bone has healed he will return to play. Jack is a very professional player and he will do everything possible to return from this injury as quick as possible," Demons football manager Josh Mahoney said.

The 21-year-old midfielder was one of Melbourne's best performers in the opening two rounds, especially in their upset win over Gold Coast when he battered Gary Ablett.

Viney's teammate Daniel Cross sustained as similar injury last year and missed four matches.
