Melbourne backman Neville Jetta has signed a three-year AFL contract extension, turning his back on the chance to test free agency.

Jetta had been due to become an unrestricted free agent at season's end but has committed to stay with the Demons until the end of 2021.

The 28-year-old has become a much-improved player for the Demons in recent years, earning selection in last year's initial All-Australian squad.

Melbourne last month locked away another prospective free agent in swingman Tom McDonald, who agreed to a new four-year deal.

The Demons will turn their attention to securing the signature of in-form midfielder Angus Brayshaw who is off-contract at the end of the year.

Brayshaw, 22, is averaging 27 disposals and five inside-50s per game after overcoming a long battle with concussion-related symptoms.

Jetta has played 132 games since making his debut in 2009.

The West Australian-born fullback was delisted at the end of 2013 but handed a lifeline by coach Paul Roos in that year's rookie draft.

"Nev has been a consistent performer for us for a long period now and is a great example of resilience and maximising opportunities," Demons football boss Josh Mahoney said.

"A three-year deal is great reward for Nev's commitment to our club."
