Demons looking to improve AFL finals spot

With the order of the top eight still to be determined, Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin says his AFL team has plenty to play for in their clash with the Giants.

Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin says he'll have no trouble getting his team up for their final round clash against GWS despite locking away a long-awaited AFL finals berth.

The Demons host the Giants on Sunday afternoon at the MCG but Goodwin says with the order of the top eight still wide open, there's plenty to play for.

He says there hasn't been a "let down" amongst the players this week after making the finals for the first time in 12 years.

"It certainly won't be difficult for our players to get up," Goodwin said on Thursday.

"We are playing for a lot this week - in front of our home crowd there's a chance to go as high as we can on the ladder and give ourselves a chance to set ourselves up for the next tournament."

A Demons loss could see them face the Giants in week one of the finals at Spotless Stadium, while a win could potentially lock in a home final.

Goodwin said their first win over another top eight team - beating West Coast in Perth - had boosted their confidence.

"It continues to add belief to our playing group," he said.

"For a long time they know they've been edging closer and building a game style that's capable in lots of different environments.

"That was the first time we've beaten a top eight side so we played a really strong footy team and we play another one this week."

Co-captain Jack Viney trained strongly on his injured foot on Thursday with Goodwin saying he's a certainty for week one of the finals.

"He did a really high load and he's training to a really high standard and he'll have another session on the weekend and then he will rejoin the main group," Goodwin said.

"He's incredibly excited and has really ramped up his training and is rearing to get out there."
