Demons want to shed inconsistent tag: Gawn

Melbourne haven't been able to back up after a good win in recent years but ruckman Max Gawn says the Demons are ready to break that unwanted pattern.

Melbourne are due for a loss this week if recent history under Paul Roos is any guide but ruckman Max Gawn is confident this year's Demons are different.

In 48 AFL matches under Roos, Melbourne are yet to register back-to-back wins.

The Demons were impressive in consigning Collingwood to their third defeat of the season at the weekend and face a hurting Richmond side next Sunday.

Gawn knows the Dees will have their doubters as they look to get off the form roller coaster.

"We don't want to be that team that everyone predicts us to have a bad game one in every three weeks - that's what we've got to build on," Gawn said.

"We're five (wins) out of seven (games) if you include the NAB Challenge, and we've been in front in the last quarter every game we've played in (this year).

"So we're slowly starting to build the right brand of footy and if we keep playing that brand we can hopefully show any team (up)."

The Tigers are set to regain lead ruckman Ivan Maric for the clash and his battle with Gawn will be a key factor in determining the outcome.

The 24-year-old has enjoyed a rich vein of form to start the season and earned high praise from teammate Jack Viney for his starring role against the Pies.

"I wouldn't be half the player without big Maxy," Viney said.

"He deserves every little bit of credit he gets. He's a fantastic player and a fantastic competitor who makes my job a whole lot easier.

"Being able to play consistently for the last couple of years, he's proved he can match it with any ruckman in the competition. He wants to be the best ruckman in the competition."
