A victorious Nancy Pelosi says Democrats in the US House of Representatives will use their newly won majority to pursue a bipartisan agenda.
"We will have accountability and we will strive for bipartisanship," Pelosi said in a speech to supporters. "We have all had enough of division."
Democrats have been projected to win enough seats to take control of the House after eight years of Republican rule.
She promised to work to lower the cost of healthcare and prescription drugs and invest in infrastructure. Republicans have also talked about working with Democrats on this after the elections, as both sides begin to signal what areas are open to co-operation.
"We will drain the swamp of dark interest money in our elections," Pelosi said, vowing to "clean up corruption to make Washington work for all Americans."
Pelosi is expected to seek the top job of House speaker, a post she held for four years beginning in 2007. She was the United States' first female speaker.
