Dennis finishes second in California Tour

Frenchman Julian Alaphilippe did enough to hold off Australia's Rohan Dennis to win the overall title in the Tour of California.

Mark Cavendish won the final stage of the Tour of California as Frenchman Julian Alaphilippe finished safely in the lead pack to beat out Australia's Rohan Dennis for the overall title.

Cavendish was able to outsprint powerhouse duo Peter Sagan and Alexander Kristoff in the final stages of the flat 138km course for his first stage in this year's race and the 10th of his career in California.

Etixx-Quick-Step rider Alaphilippe, who went into the final stage with a 16-second lead over Dennis, finished in the lead group, the Aussie five seconds back as he held on to second spot.
