A Melbourne woman detained in Mexico for not having her passport stamped could soon be deported.

Kylie Bretag was arrested at a checkpoint in the town of Tenosique after officials failed to stamp her passport when she walked across the US-Mexican border two weeks earlier.

Ms Bretag's mother Colleen says at first her daughter was dealing with her detention "OK", but after a week without much progress she was now "very distressed".

"Because she's been in very cramped conditions, hasn't been able to shower and she's had her holiday ruined," Mrs Bretag told ABC television.

Friends and family have been calling for the 30-year-old to be released by Mexican authorities, and Mrs Bretag is hopeful of a resolution in the next 24 hours.

"We got an email from Kylie today saying she would be flown to Mexico City tomorrow morning," she said.

"From there on she'll be deported but she doesn't know where to."
