A court hearing involving one of the sexiest men alive, his two Yorkshire terriers and a so-called "big-gutted" Australian man is due to start on the Gold Coast.

Johnny Depp's wife Amber Heard is facing a possible 10-year prison sentence and a hefty fine for illegally smuggling their two dogs Pistol and Boo into Australia during filming of the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie in May.

Heard has been summoned to appear at Southport Magistrates Court on Monday to face charges of illegal importation and producing a false document.

While she's unlikely to appear, her legal representatives are expected to argue her case.

Depp joked about the international scandal, and Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce's threats to have the dogs put down, recently at the Venice Film Festival.

"I killed my dogs and ate them under direct orders from some kinda, I dunno, sweaty, big-gutted man from Australia," he said on Friday in an apparent reference to Mr Joyce.

Boo and Pistol captured the passions and imaginations of Australians during the incident earlier this year.

The two became the subject of numerous internet memes, sparked the cheeky Twitter hashtag #warronterrier and even caused an angry argument that resulted in radio shock jock Kyle Sandilands calling Mr Joyce a "wanker" live on-air.

The hearing is due to begin at 11am on Monday.
