Deputy PM's push for rural doctor schools

Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack is continuing the Nationals' push to end the doctor shortage in the bush.

The deputy prime minister is ramping up his fight for rural medical schools to help repair Australia's regional doctor shortage.

Despite opposition from the Australian Medical Association, Michael McCormack says governments have already tried training students in the bush for a few years after graduation. He says it's time to train doctors in the regions from start to finish.

"We know this is something which has mixed opinions. And we get that simply training more doctors is not the answer ... but we are elected to speak up for the people who do not have the access to a doctor they deserve," Mr McCormack writes in Fairfax Media on Tuesday.
