Designer Varvatos launches record label

Menswear guru John Varvatos has launched a record label.

Celebrity designer John Varvatos has launched a record label.

The menswear guru has teamed up with executives at Republic Records for his new venture, John Varvatos Records.

"I think the record industry has gotten to be more about labels wondering what the new single is rather than labels nurturing artists," Varvatos told RollingStone.com.

"It's gotten away from making a full album of music that someone would want to listen to all the way through.

"I want the artists to feel like I'm a real partner with them, not that I'm just a label head that's connected with another big label, Republic Records. I want them to feel that there's a partner there."

Varvatos has yet to sign anyone to the label, but he explains he is searching for the next big act.

"We want to find the next Guns N' Roses," he said.

"I'm not looking for old-school rock and roll, and I'm not looking to sign old-school rockers that are looking for a label. That's not the thing. I'm looking for young artists who are looking for a haven to create and evolve their music.

"If somebody's got a different style, I want to embrace that style. It's really to embrace and nurture their style in every regard, the musical style and their own personal style."

Varvatos has long been linked to stylish musicians including Iggy Pop, Paul Weller and KISS.
