Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sparked criticism online after he praised the prime minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, for her efforts fighting terrorism "despite being a woman".

The Indian leader was on a visit to Bangladesh when he said in Hindi that it was "heartening that the prime minister of Bangladesh, despite being a woman, is openly saying that she has zero tolerance for terrorism.

"I would like to congratulate Sheikh Hasina for her firmness to deal with the menace."

The comments spared outrage on social media, with many ridiculing Modi using the hashtag #DespiteBeingAWoman.

The hashtag is now trending in India.
