Sydney detectives are waiting for the results of two post-mortem examinations, as they investigate whether a young mother and her baby girl died in a case of murder-suicide.

Police on Monday said murder-suicide was one line of inquiry, but it was too soon to rule out double-homicide as a possibility.

A relative discovered the body of the mother, 29, along with that of her daughter, at the family's modest Campsie home on Monday afternoon.

Paramedics tried to revive the 17-month-old but she was pronounced dead on arrival at St George Hospital.

Campsie Local Area Command Superintendent Michael McLean said it appeared the pair had died from asphyxiation.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
