Dew glad to hear Swallow wants to stay

Not everyone wants to bail on the Gold Coast Suns, it seems, with coach Stuart Dew praising an "invested" David Swallow for pledging his future to the club.

Gold Coast coach Stuart Dew is pleased to hear star midfielder David Swallow is keen to extend his AFL contract for the long term.

Plagued by player departures since their inception, Swallow's pledge to stick around on the tourist strip is a welcome change of fortune for the battling Suns.

The 25-year-old one of only eight players still at the club from their original 2011 roster.

One of them, Tom Lynch, wants to move to Victoria, while Steven May is out of contract at the end of next season and is yet to give any indication as to his future plans.

Other foundation Suns like Dion Prestia, Josh Caddy and Charlie Dixon have struck paydirt at other clubs after securing trades interstate.

But Swallow told News Corp this week he was determined to stay put and find success with the Suns, who drafted him with the number one pick in 2010.

Dew said it was no surprise to him.

"I think everyone knows Dave and certainly where his heart lies," Dew said.

"Obviously Dave spoke in the right manner and you know Dave - he doesn't say things for the sake of it.

"He's invested."

Swallow's current deal expires at the end of 2019 but he said he would sit down with Gold Coast management later this year to nut out an extension.

His brother, ex-North Melbourne skipper Andrew, recently moved to nearby Byron Bay.

The Suns hope a similar commitment will be forthcoming from key defender May to avoid a circus like the one surrounding Lynch.

May, 26, became the club's sole captain when Lynch was dumped from the joint role after announcing his intentions earlier this month.

But May won't be short of suitors if he exercises his free agency rights, with reports suggesting Collingwood is prepared to swoop for him.
