Direct action here to stay, says Hunt

The coalition's direct action policy is a long-term commitment to tackling climate change, says Greg Hunt.

Environment Minister Greg Hunt wants the coalition's direct action plan to be Australia's climate change policy for at least the next 25 years.

Mr Hunt told the clean energy industry at a summit via video the government planned to continue the policy until at least 2040.

Critics say the policy, that pays polluters not to pollute, is expensive and is not funded enough to achieve significant carbon emissions reductions.

It comes as News Ltd reports a leaked document shows Labor is considering reintroducing a modified carbon tax.

Opposition spokesman Mark Butler labelled the reports misleading and wrong, saying the document was a briefing paper, not a policy document.

Labor will not introduce a carbon tax, he said on Wednesday, adding the party was working on a policy that would be revealed well before the next election.

The opposition is committed to introducing an emissions trading scheme.

Mr Hunt earlier told reporters in Melbourne that Labor would push up the cost of family power bills.

Treasurer Joe Hockey said there was a broader agenda within Labor.

"It would be madness for Bill Shorten to follow that path, but obviously someone wants to `kill Bill' at the moment," Mr Hockey told ABC TV.
