Disability inquiry is on the way: Morrison

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has indicated he will shortly release the final terms of references for a royal commission into Australians with disabilities.

Scott Morrison has indicated he will kick off a royal commission into the abuse of disabled Australians within days.

The government set aside $527 million in Tuesday night's budget to fully fund the inquiry which is expected to examine mistreatment in institutional settings, workplaces, schools, home and the community.

"When we do things, we do them properly and that's why we have committed to that royal commission into the abuse of people with disabilities," the prime minister told reporters in Googong, on the outskirts of Queanbeyan NSW on Thursday.

"I'll have more to say about this in the next few days."

Mr Morrison must announce the inquiry before calling the election when the government enters caretaker mode and such an inquiry can no longer be established.

He is expected to release the final terms of reference this week, after consultation on the draft version closed at the end of March.
