A diver has been killed in the salvage of the Costa Concordia cruise ship off the coast of Italy, the consortium leading the operation says.

The incident involving the 41-year-old Spaniard took place on Saturday and was being investigated, Titan Micoperi said.

Media reports on Sunday said his leg became caught in the underwater wreckage and he bled to death despite being brought to the surface by fellow divers.

On January 13, 2012, the Costa Concordia steered too close to shore off the coast of the island of Giglio, hit a reef and partly capsized. Thirty-two of the 4229 people on board were killed.

"This tragedy has claimed another life," Giglio Mayor Sergio Otelli was quoted saying in a report by Italy's ANSA news agency.

Divers are working to stabilise and refloat the wreck to tow it away.
