Scott Pye could be driving for his V8 Supercars future, with DJR Team Penske ruling out adding a third car to their fleet next season.

There's speculation the outfit might expand in 2017 to make way for Scott McLaughlin, amid uncertainty around his current team Garry Rogers Motorsport following the decision by Volvo to withdraw its support.

But high-profile American owner Roger Penske says a third car is not on the cards.

"Two cars is what we're going to run for sure," he told Speedcafe.com.

"We've got work to do before we start thinking that we're going to run three cars.

"If it's a 100 yard football field were on the 40 yard line. We haven't got to midfield yet."

DJR Team Penske went from a single car to two this season, retaining Pye and adding Fabian Coulthard.

But Pye could have a battle on his hands to keep the second seat if the suggested interest in McLaughlin is true and the Kiwi decides to leave GRM.

Penske, though, is playing down such talk.

"We've had a number of drivers come to us, but we have two good drivers right now," he said.

"Probably no one wanted to drive for us a year ago, so it's interesting, but we need to take the talent we have now.

"I think we have got to give Pye a chance to show what he can do."

Penske said he felt Pye and Coulthard worked well together, they were young and experienced and had long-term potential.

"Maybe they're not regarded as the top guys at the top level but that's what I want because I know they can get there," he added.
