Docherty signs new AFL deal with Blues

Sam Docherty has signed a three-year contract extension with Carlton, tying him to the AFL club until at least 2018.

In-form utility Sam Docherty has signed a new three-year deal with Carlton, tying him to the AFL club until at least the end of the 2018 season.

Docherty, 21, has been a rare shining light in what has been a dismal start to the 2015 campaign for the Blues.

After joining Carlton from Brisbane, Docherty finished ninth in the best and fairest count in 2014 and has stepped up even further this year.

"It's great to get the deal done - there was never any doubt in my mind about whether I was staying or going," Docherty said.

"I think Carlton has some success around the corner. I know that it doesn't seem like that now, but the club is working really hard and the players are working really hard to get to where we want to be."
